1974

March 10 – A Japanese World War II soldier, Second Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda, surrenders in the Philippines.
March 18 – End of Oil embargo crisis: Most OPEC nations end a 5-month oil embargo against theUnited StatesEurope and Japan.
April 6 – Swedish pop group ABBA win the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo.
May 18 - Nuclear test: Under Project Smiling BuddhaIndia successfully detonates its first nuclear weapon, becoming the 6th nation to do so.
June 13 – The 1974 FIFA World Cup begins in West Germany.
November 1 – World Tourism Organization (WTO or WToO) established.
January 16 – Kate Moss, English model was born
June 1 – Alanis Morissette, Canadian singer was born


1984


January 24 – The Apple Macintosh is introduced.
February 19 – The 1984 Winter Olympics close in Sarajevo.
February 11 – STS-41-BSpace Shuttle Challenger makes the first shuttle landing at the Kennedy Space Center.

1994


January 8 – Soyuz TM-18Valeri Polyakov begins his 437.7 day orbit, eventually setting the world record for days spent in orbit.
January 14 – U.S. President Bill Clinton and Russian President Boris Yeltsin sign the Kremlin Accords, which stop the preprogrammed aiming of nuclear missiles toward each country's targets, and also provide for the dismantling of the nuclear arsenal in Ukraine.
March 27 -  TV tycoon Silvio Berlusconi's right-wing coalition wins the Italian general election.
April 3 – Last date on which Kurt Cobain, of the band Nirvana, is seen alive.
April 16 – Voters in Finland decide to join the European Union in a referendum.
May 6 – The Channel Tunnel, which took 15,000 workers over 7 years to complete, opens between England and France, enabling passengers to travel between the 2 countries in 35 minutes.
May 10 - Nelson Mandela is inaugurated as South Africa's first black president.
July 17 – Brazil wins the 1994 FIFA World Cup, defeating Italy by 3–2 in penalties (full time 0–0)
July 20 – Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9's Fragment Q1 hits Jupiter.
August 31 - The Russian army leaves Estonia.
November 13 - Voters in Sweden decide to join the European Union in a referendum.
December 15 – The first version of web browser Netscape Navigator is released.
Tropical Storms Alberto & Gordon cause very damaging floods, intense winds and extensive problems directly over the Southeastern United States and theCaribbean Islands. The death tolls are unusually severe and damages are extreme in both tropical storms.

2004

January 4 - Mikhail Saakashvili wins the presidential elections in Georgia.
February 3 - The CIA admits that there was no imminent threat from weapons of mass destruction before the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
February 4 – Facebook was founded at CambridgeMassachusetts.
March 11 – Terrorists execute simultaneous attacks, with bombs in 4 rush-hour trains in Madrid, killing 191 people.
March 12 – Following the terrorist attacks in Madrid the previous day, millions of protesters against terrorism take to the streets of Spanish cities.
May 1 – The largest expansion to date of the European Union takes place, extending the Union by 10 member-states: PolandLithuaniaLatviaEstonia, the Czech RepublicSlovakiaSloveniaHungaryMalta and Cyprus.
June 8  - The first transit of Venus since 1882 occurs; the next one will occur in 2012.
November 2 - Dutch film maker Theo van Gogh is assassinated in AmsterdamNetherlands by Mohammed Bouyeri.
November 13 – After six days of intense battles, the Iraqi town of Fallujah is fully occupied by U.S. forces.
November 16 - NASA's hypersonic Scramjet breaks a record by reaching a velocity of about 7,000 mph in an unmanned experimental flight. It obtains a speed of Mach9.6, almost 10 times the speed of sound.
November 21 – Ukrainian presidential election, 2004Viktor Yanukovych is declared the winner in the final round.
